Regfree Domain

A deleted domain with SEO value that can be registered at standard price, bypassing the auction process entirely.

A regfree domain (short for "register for free," meaning at standard registration price) is a deleted domain that slipped through the drop catching process and is available for anyone to register at the normal yearly fee. Instead of paying hundreds at auction, you register it for around 10-15 euros through any domain registrar.

How they end up available

Most expired domains with good metrics get caught by services like DropCatch or Catched before they even hit the open market. But drop catchers primarily focus on .com and a few popular gTLDs. Country code TLDs like .fr, .de, or .ca get far less attention. Domains in these TLDs can expire, go through pending delete, and land back in the registry's available pool without anyone noticing.

Some of these overlooked domains have real value. They were active businesses or local organizations with years of history, backlinks, and authority. They just happened to expire in a TLD where nobody was watching.

The CatchDoms regfree pipeline

Finding regfree domains at scale requires a different approach than monitoring auction platforms. CatchDoms uses Common Crawl data (a public archive of billions of web pages) to identify domains that were recently active but are now deleted. The pipeline works like this:

  1. Extract domains from Common Crawl's index across 49 ccTLDs
  2. Filter for quality: remove spammy names, hyphens, and numeric domains
  3. DNS check to find domains returning NXDOMAIN (not registered)
  4. Availability check via registrar APIs to confirm they're purchasable
  5. Enrich with SEO metrics: Wayback age, Trust Flow, backlinks, DA

This process currently tracks 80,000+ regfree domains across 49 ccTLDs including .fr, .de, .it, .es, .ca, .co.uk, and many more.

Why regfree domains are a smart play

The economics are simple. An aged domain with decent backlinks costs 200-500 euros at auction. The same quality domain in a ccTLD might be sitting in the regfree pool at 10 euros. You won't find premium .com domains here, but for regional SEO or affiliate sites targeting specific countries, regfree domains offer exceptional value. On CatchDoms, you can filter regfree domains by age, Trust Flow, backlinks, and language to find the best opportunities.

Frequently asked questions

What does regfree mean?

Regfree is short for “register for free,” meaning at the standard registration price. These are deleted domains you can register through any registrar for around 10-15 euros per year, with no auction or bidding involved.

Why are regfree domains cheaper than auction domains?

Drop catching services mostly focus on .com and popular gTLDs. Country code TLDs like .fr, .de, or .ca get far less attention, so many quality domains slip through and end up available at normal registration prices.

Are regfree domains good for SEO?

They can be, especially for regional SEO targeting specific countries. Many regfree domains have years of history, backlinks, and authority. You just need to check the metrics before registering, same as any expired domain.
