Frequently asked questions

Why RDAP instead of Whois?

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for Whois. It returns structured JSON over HTTPS instead of free-form text, is standardized by the IETF, and is mandated by ICANN for all gTLDs. Most major ccTLDs now support it too. When a TLD hasn't migrated yet, the lookup may return "no record" — that's a coverage gap on the registry side, not a missing domain.

What do the status codes mean?

EPP status codes describe a domain's lock state: clientTransferProhibited means the registrar blocks transfers, serverHold means the registry has suspended DNS resolution, pendingDelete means the domain is on its way to being released. Is the registrant's identity shown?

Not usually. Since GDPR and ICANN's Temporary Specification, most registrars redact the registrant's name, email and address by default. What you'll see reliably is the registrar itself, its abuse contact, the domain's key dates, nameservers and lock status.

Why does the age or expiry not show for some TLDs?

Registries expose different subsets of RDAP fields. .fr for example returns creation but not always expiry; .de returns very little. When a field is missing here, it's because the authoritative registry chose not to include it — not because we couldn't fetch it.
